The Department of Counselor Education at California State University, Sacramento seeks a part-time Instructional Student Assistant (ISA) to assist with EDC 250: Educational Research/Research in Counseling.

Timeline:

Position Description

Under the supervision of the course instructor, the ISA will:

  • Support instructional activities for EDC 250 (in person and/or virtual as scheduled).
  • Provide formative feedback on student research assignments (e.g., research questions, literature review sections, methodology drafts, APA formatting) using instructor-provided rubrics. 
  • Assist with grading low-stakes assignments and quizzes and help maintain organized, accurate records in Canvas as directed. 
  • Help students navigate basic research tools (e.g., library databases, APA resources, survey platforms) and refer more complex questions to the instructor. 
  • Assist with planning and organizing the combined-section virtual research symposium, including: 
    • Collecting titles and abstracts 
    • Assisting with program preparation and presentation schedule 
    • Providing basic Zoom/ virtual room support on the day of the event 
  • Communicate with students (e.g., via email or Canvas) about deadlines and symposium logistics, as directed by the instructor. 
  • Attend regular check-ins with the instructor to review priorities, timelines, and student needs. 
  • Perform other related duties that support student learning and the successful delivery of the course.

 

Eligibility Requirements:

Graduate Students

     Unit Load: 4 min – 12 max per semester

     GPA Minimum: 3.00 (overall), newly admitted students: 2.75 GPA

Minimum qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled graduate student at Sacramento State with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Experience conducting research in counseling, education, or a related field (e.g., course-based research projects, thesis, or independent study). 
  • Experience having submitted an IRB application and/or presented research at a conference, symposium, or similar venue.
  • Strong written communication skills and familiarity with APA style.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions, apply grading rubrics consistently, and maintain confidentiality of student records.
  • Demonstrated reliability, professionalism, and effective time management.

Preferred qualifications (if applicable):

  • MS in Counseling graduate student (currently enrolled) is strongly preferred.
  • Prior experience as a peer mentor, tutor, or teaching/graduate assistant in counseling, education, or related fields.
  • Experience organizing academic or professional events (e.g., symposia, poster sessions, class presentations).
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and comfort using Canvas, Zoom, and other instructional technologies.
