The CSU Chancellor's Office, located on the waterfront adjacent to the Aquarium of the Pacific in downtown Long Beach, is the headquarters for the nation's largest and most diverse system of higher education. Salary

The anticipated salary hiring range is up to $90,000 per year, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Position Information

The California State University, Office of the Chancellor, is seeking an Executive Writing Manager to write and edit communication materials for senior executives in the Chancellor’s Office, most notably the Chancellor, Board Chair and the chiefs of staff of the Executive Office and the Office of the Board of Trustees. These projects include, but are not limited to, speeches, talking points, correspondence, social media, event briefings, presentations, op eds, statements, reports and memos. The Executive Writing Manager will also develop and execute social media strategy. Alongside other members of the Executive Writing team, the Executive Writing Manager ensures accuracy of fact, appropriateness of tone and consistency of message in high-level internal and external communications. This is an essential quality-control function that protects the public image of the California State University.

This position is approved for telecommuting (two days telecommuting, three days in office (in-person)) with onsite work at the main headquarters located in Long Beach, California.

Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the Senior Director, Executive Writing, the Executive Writing Manager will:

-Under supervision of the Senior Director of Executive Writing - with project oversight from the Chancellor’s Chief of Staff and the Office of the Board of Trustees Chief of Staff - the Executive Writing Manager is responsible for independent project direction, project creation and quality assurance as appropriate to achieve goals and policy directives of the Chancellor, Board Chair and other Chancellor’s Office senior leadership. It is a writing- and editing-intensive position, with projects including but not limited to, drafting and editing speeches, talking points, correspondence, event briefings, presentations, op eds, statements, reports and memos.

-The incumbent will actively participate in the development of executive communications and messaging strategies, with special emphasis on social media and thought leadership strategic development.

-The incumbent ensures accuracy of fact, appropriateness of tone and consistency of message in high-level internal and external communications. This is an essential quality control function that protects the public image of the California State University.

-The incumbent assists in the management of Executive Writing Department workflow, including assigning and calendaring projects, tracking progress and ensuring timely completion and approval.

-The incumbent will work directly and often independently with the Chancellor and the Chair of the Board of Trustees. This requires participation in confidential leadership discussions and access to confidential information.

Qualifications

This position requires:

-A bachelor's degree in English, journalism, public relations, public policy, political science or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience; a master's is preferred.

-A minimum of three to five years of executive writing/communications experience, preferably in an education or government setting, with specific experience providing writing and communications support for senior and/or executive leadership.

-Experience developing social media strategy.

-Experience writing and editing according to the Associate Press Stylebook or an AP-based style guide.

-Ability to function effectively at the executive level in a large and complex organization and to contribute to the overall management of such an organization.

-Experience producing high-quality documents with Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Excel. Experience with Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Photoshop and related programs is preferred.

-Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

-Knowledge of best practices related to the development and implementation of public relations/public affairs strategy.

-Ability to exercise a high degree of independence, judgment and discretion.

-Ability to work under pressure and with short deadlines.

Conflict of Interest

The duties of this position will include participation in decisions that may have a material financial benefit to the incumbent. Therefore, the selected candidate will be required to file Conflict of Interest Form 700: Statement of Economic Interest when they first occupy the position, and on an annual basis, complete ethics training within 6 months of appointment, and attend this training every other year thereafter.

As such, the University requires all employees upon date of hire to reside in the State of California.
